Note ban shock over? Economic growth to end 5-quarter slide in Q2: Poll

Image
The Reuters poll of 52 economists over past week showed GDP growth likely rose to 6.4% LATEST NEWS : Indian economic growth likely rebounded in the July-September quarter from the slowest growth in three years, with demand picking up modestly as the effects from a shock Note ban on high-value currency notes eased, a Reuters poll showed. If that's correct, the data will be the latest evidence of a broad-based global economic upturn across Asia and most of the world that has many major central banks poised to move away from ultra-easy monetary policy. India was the world's fastest-growing major economy in 2016. But already-slowing growth was made weaker by the surprise cash clampdown late in 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, which has hurt consumer spending ever since. In July, the government introduced a goods and services tax that made sweeping changes to the way businesses across Asia's third largest economy charge taxes, deliverin...

This comes close on the heels of its counterpart in the US turning its back on it two years after it had endorsed it. The author looks at TRAI’s recommendations and also at what the big influencers were in this matter globally. We can now say, with some certainty, that the Indian telecom regulator (TRAI)’s support for net-neutrality is among the strongest in the world. The timing could not be more auspicious – TRAI now stands tall alongside European regulators, even as it positions itself in stark contrast to its US counterpart, the Federal Communication Commission, where the Trump appointee Chairman Ajit Pai infamously proposed a roll back of net-neutrality rules last week. Yesterday, TRA...

NRAI has the country’s top fast-food chains, among others, as its members. The government on November 10 had slashed the GST on AC and non-AC restaurants — excluding five-star hotels — to 5 per cent from the earlier 18 per cent and 12 per cent, respectively. But the input tax credit, a facility to set off tax paid on inputs with final tax, was withdrawn with the November 10 revision, prompting restaurant chains, including McDonald's to withhold passing the full benefit of the tax cut.
